Foilyage vs Balayage

When choosing the right hair color and style for you, you can get caught up or confused between choosing from two of the most popular hair techniques: Foilyage vs. Balayage.

Not to worry. This article will guide you on what you need to know about foilyage and balayage, and how to choose which is right for you.

What is Foilyage?

Foilyage is basically a new and artistic way to apply the balayage technique to your hair. It is done by using the sweeping or painting technique to apply any hair color of your choice to your hair.

After this is done, some parts of your hair are wrapped with foil, heat is applied, and left to process. The result is usually a more natural yet intense look created by the foil.

What is Balayage?

Balayage is a hair styling technique with a french origin, meaning ‘An act of sweeping.’

This hair technique was first developed in France and was given its name because the hair stylist applied color to the hair with a sweeping technique or stroke.

This free-hand painting is applied to the top and ends of the hair giving it a light and natural look

What is the difference between foilyage and balayage?

Foilyage and Balayage are done using the sweeping method, and they both have a natural effect on the hair with dark roots and light ends, however, there is a difference between the two hair techniques.

During foilyage, foil is used in wrapping some parts of the hair after the color is applied. It is then heated, allowing the color to penetrate into the wrapped parts of the hair.

Balayage gives a more natural look and is less expensive to maintain. It can last up to 3-5 months if well maintained, while foilyage gives the hair a more intense look.

Because of the foil application, a foilyage appointment takes about 3 hours or more, while balayage takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the hairstylist.

How to Choose which is right for you

Now that you know the difference between the foilyage and balayage techniques, you may be curious to know which one is right for you. The answer is simple.

It depends on your type of hair and the type of look you want to go for. You should also consider how much time and money you’re willing to commit to maintaining the hair.

If you want a natural and low-maintenance hair color, you should go for the balayage. If you have dark hair, foilyage will give your hair a more intense and bold look.
